Factors and Health Behaviors Affecting Smartphone Over-dependency Among Adolescents: Focus on 2020 Adolescents¡¯ Health Behavior Survey

Abstract

|
Objectives: To investigate factors and health behaviors affecting adolescents' smartphone dependence using data from the 16th Adolescents¡¯ Health Behavior Survey(2020).
Methods: Data of 53,457 adolescent participants of a health behavior survey were statistically examined using descriptive and polynomial logistic regression analysis.
Results: Factors influencing the risk of smartphone over-dependence included female students, middle school students, small and medium-sized cities, low or high-income groups, low academic performance, living with family members, living in childcare facilities, parents' educational qualification of college graduation or higher, being motherless, low subjective health level, high stress, high loneliness, feeling of depression, and using smartphones for more than 240 minutes on weekdays and weekends.
Conclusions: It is necessary to promote the development and institutional improvement of health education programs to help adolescents maintain good health behaviors and improve self-control.
